‘Songs Inside’ is a compelling feature-length documentary that chronicles the transformative journey of a small group of women from the Adelaide Women’s Prison who, over six months, discovered the healing power of music. As the creative process unfolds, it unearths profound struggles with trauma and addiction, demonstrating that even within the complexities of prison life, music can serve as a universal force for healing and hope. Led by Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, their journey culminates in a historic performance - the largest concert ever staged within an Australian prison - featuring the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and an audience of over 200 inmates and special guests.
More than just a film, 'Songs Inside' is the centrepiece of a impact and outreach tour to challenge societal attitudes about incarcerated women and advocate for systemic change within Australia’s justice system. We have screened the film in prisons and communities across South Australia, as well for policy and decision makers in government and community support organisations.
“In 2023 I was granted unprecedented access to film in all areas of the Adelaide Women’s Prison. This allowed me to completely immerse myself in the prison environment and develop intense, meaningful and trusting relationships with those involved. The result is a shockingly honest insight into the complex lives of women in prison and the transformative power that music can have on their futures. The stories of the women I followed are woven together to create an urgent and compassionate portrait of incarcerated women today.”

“It wasn’t just about songs; it was about self-worth. When you offer someone dignity, creativity and the space to be seen, transformation is possible.”
Simone - Songs Inside participant
“It’s important for our communities to understand the realities of women entering and leaving the prison system. They are often caught in complex and traumatic circumstances, many as victim-survivors of family and domestic violence. The consequences of incarceration are far reaching. Songs Inside has given us a platform to advocate for change.”
Lesley Kirkwood – Principal Legal Officer, Family Violence Legal Services Aboriginal Corporation SA
“We need to look at the good in people, instead of focusing on their flaws. We can all change - our past doesn't have to determine our future. It's not how we start our journey, it’s how we finish it.
